Urd from Ah! My Goddess

urd

Also known as “Oh My Goddess” or “Aa Megamisama”. I was a pretty huge fan of this show when I was in junior high, because I have a total weakness for anything goddess-related. Ah! My Goddess uses a lot of Norse mythology, which is super interesting to me. My friend Lisa re-introduced me to it when we first became friends, which lead to me falling in love with it all over again. We’ve been planning to do Urd and Belldandy together since we first became friends, 5 years ago, and just got around to finally doing it at Otakon 2009. What took so long, am I right.
Construction. I’ve actually made two versions of this costume. The first one I made in 2004, out of velvet. The construction of it was good, but I made it unnecessarily difficult to wear because in my quest for accuracy, I wanted the back to be open like hers is in the show. I now realise that clothing does not work that way, and you can’t see that part of the costume anyways because of the wig. So when I re-made it in 2009, I made it like a regular dress rather than a robe, and it closes with zipper in the back. I drafted my own patterns for most of this costume, and hand painted the tiger stripes on the belt and shoulder things. Lisa made the earrings and helped me with a lot of the other jewelry. I used the wig and shoes from my old Urd costume.
