Kaylee from Firefly

Firefly was a short lived science fiction series written by Joss Whedon, the same guy who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was made into a movie, Serenity, as well. I’m a big fan of Buffy and everything else Joss Whedon does, so naturally I loved Firefly. From the first episode, I knew I wanted to make Kaylee’s oufit.

I actually made two versions of this costume: one for Dragon*Con 2006 and a new one for Comic Con 2009. The original one I made became really baggy when I lost weight, and wasn’t long enough in the torso anyways, so I sold it on eBay. I wanted a new one, and I happened to have enough fabric left over from the first version to make a new pair of coveralls. I also found the PERFECT turquoise brocade at a Chinatown fabric store for a new jacket, so I went for it. I’m really happy I did, because the second version is way better. I love those damn coveralls; I wear them for fun, I wear them when I’m screen printing, painting, or just rolling around the house.
Construction. The jacket was made from a pattern I drafted myself. The coveralls I made by combining a trousers pattern with a bodice pattern. In the first version, I didn’t put pockets on them, but I made a point to in version 2.0. The sandals I already had, and the umbrella I bought from the Firefly Cargo Bay.
